Mental health - achievements

  • Dementia diagnosis rates: provided clinical advice on best practice to all health communities and provided support to clinical commissioning groups in Leicestershire increasing dementia diagnosis rates by 10% through case finding in long term care homes. The project is now being rolled out in Lincolnshire, with a view to spread across the East Midlands.

  • Innovation projects: provided funding to twelve projects to support improvements in service provision and delivery around dementia care, crisis management and parity of esteem. All projects have now submitted evaluation data this will be followed by final reports in March 2016.

  • Learning disability review: reviewed and advised on nine local authority learning disability self-assessment framework submissions to ensure learning disability specialist providers shared East Midlands best practice.

  • Parity of esteem: identified and benchmarked services against regional consensus-based top ten best practice indicators. Results were shared with East Midlands health and well-being boards with a proposal to assist developing action plans for improvement.

  • Development of neurological services: produced guidance and service specification for commissioning of neurological services which have been launched at the rehabilitation for long term neurological conditions event.

  • Perinatal mental health: initiated a programme to link data to identify pregnant and postpartum women with serious mental illnesses who are not being referred into perinatal mental health services. The programme will support the development of specialised services to improve access for all women who require perinatal mental health care, in line with national standards.

  • Child and adolescent mental health services: supported the agreement of CAHMS as a priority for the East Midlands Collaborative Commissioning Group and also provided clinical advice to inform the CAHMS local transformational panels. We developed a self-assessment tool and user-guide for Future in Mind aiming to support improvement in CAHMS services, disseminated nationally.

  • Improving access to psychological therapies: provided clinical advice to assurance processes in relation to IAPT targets for access and recovery rates. In conjunction with Health Education East Midlands, completed training needs analysis for psychological therapists. Also secured funding for IAPT leadership and upskilling programme from April 2016.

  • Early intervention in psychosis: secured clinical leadership and ensured active network to support commissioners and providers to achieve improvements in national access and waiting time standards. Also secured regional funding to undertake service mapping project.
  • Crisis concordat: facilitated development and submission of crisis concordat action plans by health and care systems, including audit of section 136 facilities in the East Midlands.
  • Liaison psychiatry: Providing clinical advice to liaison psychiatry in emergency department assurance process with a view to providing local improvement support and training for commissioners and providers.
