Clinical Fellows Programme

Providing opportunities for clinical leadership development

Clinical senates provide fertile opportunities for clinical leadership development, as this is the nature of their function and every day work, focus and outputs. Participants in clinical senate work get excellent experience of system based thinking with real life examples. Clinical senates can be an important resource for NHS England/NHS Improvement and the Leadership Academy in developing and recruiting local and regional talent.

In the East Midlands, this has culminated in a unique opportunity to appoint and develop six clinical fellows to enhance the clinical senate’s work, whilst allowing the fellows the opportunity to gain invaluable involvement with the healthcare leadership agenda. This initiative has not only added value to the productivity and role of the clinical senate but will leave a legacy of excellence in clinical leadership for the future in their respective areas and in the NHS more widely.

Background

Six clinical fellows were recruited in June 2018 for a period of 12 months and work for the senate for one session perweek.

Appointed Clinical Fellows

  • Elizabeth Gonzalez Malaga is a Specialty Registrar in Special Care Dentistry at Northamptonshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust
  • Rebecca Hall is a GP partner at Charnwood Community Medical Group
  • Lucy Gavens is a Specialty Registrar in Public Health at Derby Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
  • Eyad Issa is NIHR Clinical Lecturer in HPB Surgery and a Surgical Registrar at the University of Leicester
  • Remi Popoola is a Senior Physiotherapist at Danetre Hospital, Daventry
  • Chris Miller is a Consultant in Geriatric Medicine and General Internal Medicine at Leicester Royal Infirmary

Role, Purpose and Opportunities

The clinical fellow role and purpose has been defined as follows:
  • To lead on specific areas of work at a strategic level in a supported environment.
  • To support the clinical senate work programme.
  • To write and present reports as required in relation to the clinical senate work programme.
  • To attend meetings with senior individuals within the East Midlands and to conduct their work with dedication and professionalism.
The clinical fellows have the opportunity to work with senior leaders to develop their skills in leadership, strategy, project management and health policy across a wide range of health systems and encouraged to develop effective network links.
