Cancer Research UK – New Facilitators for East Midlands
Cancer Research UK (CRUK) has appointed Tracy Mann as the new Facilitator Manager for the East Midlands. Tracy is supported by five recently appointed Facilitators who have commenced roles in our region as part of CRUK's Health Professional Engagement Programme:

Sherwood Forest NHS Hospital Trust
Adam Littler
has commenced in the substantive role of Head of Cancer Services from 1 June at Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Trust. Adam has taken over the lead for the Cancer Services team from Denise Gale, Interim Cancer Programme Director, and is responsible for working closely with managerial and clinical teams to continue to improve the Trust’s achievement of all cancer waiting times standards. The role incorporates the national and local cancer agenda, ensuring that patient experience and cancer services at Sherwood Forest Hospital Trust (SFHT) are delivered in line with national and local policy decisions. Adam has considerable operational experience at SFHT/other NHS hospitals and is familiar with the cancer agenda.

Mandy Edwards has recently commenced a 2-year secondment with Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Trust/Macmillan to develop and roll-out the e-HNA (Holistic Needs Assessment), recovery package for living with and beyond cancer, and support the further development of cancer pathways. This role builds on Mandy’s considerable experience gained in her previous role of Assistant Cancer Services Manager.

Samantha Owens joined Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Trust on secondment on 18 July in the role of Assistant Cancer Services Manager. Samantha has previously worked in the Clinical Research Network, based at Nottingham University Hospitals, and is familiar with the cancer agenda.

Dr Dan Barnes FRCR trained in medicine at Cardiff, qualifying in 2000. After working in general medicine and anaesthetics he trained in general radiology in Leicester until 2009. On completing his sub speciality training in cardiothoracic imaging Dan went to Canada to do a fellowship in thoracic imaging in Ottawa. After leaving Canada with some new perspectives and improved grasp of French, he returned to the UK and has been a Consultant Thoracic Radiologist in Glenfield hospital for the last 2 years. Besides clinical work his interests are medical education and management.

Cancer Research UK – New Facilitators for East Midlands
Tracy Mann the new Facilitator Manager for the East Midlands is supported by five Facilitators who have commenced roles as part of CRUK's Health Professional Engagement Programme.

Cancer Research UK can offer help and support to Health Professionals by:
  • providing GP practices with their cancer profiles and support to interpret data
  • looking at referral patterns, current practice, screening uptake and safety netting procedures
  • helping with improvements and action planning as/if required
  • training for early diagnosis tools and interventions (Cancer Decision Support Tools, NICE Guidelines, Risk Assessment Tools, Qcancer)
  • sharing best practice and innovative solutions trialled by other practices
  • providing training tailored to individual needs on a range of topics to clinical and non-clinical staff as necessary/requested
  • providing support, information, evidence, and resources to help Health Professionals with specific issues such as engaging with hard to reach groups, raising awareness, and communications
  • providing support to carry out audits, risk analysis, SEAs (significant event audits)
  • working across primary and secondary care to facilitate communications and pathways, improving cancer outcomes in ways which will be of greatest benefit to everyone
  • we are an extra pair of (FREE) hands!
  • crucially, Facilitators provide follow–up and practical support to help busy practices to implement various early diagnosis activities
